The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) decided on July 25 to appoint former Justice Minister Toshio Ogawa, 68, to replace Akira Gunji, who is chairman of the DP caucus in the House of Councillors. Ogawa was the only person who registered his candidacy for chairmanship. The chairman’ term is two years. On July 29, the DP will formally approve Ogawa’s appointment in a general meeting of its Upper House members. Ogawa has served as secretary general since October 2015. In the July 10 election, he was elected for the fourth time to the Upper House from the Tokyo constituency. He told reporters yesterday, “Although the number of DP members decreased, I hope we will face off as a body against the Abe administration.”
