Ryukyu Shimpo front-paged a report claiming that some of the GOJ’s work to construct new landing zones at the Northern Training Area lacks legal grounds because the MOD Okinawa Defense Bureau has failed to follow the necessary legal procedures. Lawyers point out that the defense bureau installed wire fences on the road in front of a training area gate without the consent of the prefecture. The paper claimed that the defense bureau has failed to provide legal grounds for its removal of the tents and belongings of protesters in front of the gate, and is cutting down trees in national forests in order to create a path from the gate to the helipad construction sites without consulting with the forest property office of Okinawa. The paper wrote that these actions show that the GOJ is desperate to remove the protesters and resume the construction work.
