All dailies noted that both the ruling coalition and the opposition camp suffered major setbacks in the Tokyo gubernatorial election, as their candidates were outperformed by Koike by a wide margin. While Nikkei quoted an unnamed senior LDP official as saying that although Koike’s victory will have a limited impact on national politics, the Abe administration may have a difficult time reconciling with the “defiant” Tokyo leader. The papers also said conservative-minded DP parliamentarians may step up their criticism of the present leadership’s policy of deepening ties with the Japanese Communist Party.
