Saturday morning’s Nikkei wrote from Beijing that the Chinese Foreign Ministry acknowledged on Friday that the relevant government authorities are currently investigating a Japanese national on suspicion of undermining China’s national security. According to the daily, the Japanese man in question, who has been involved in bilateral cultural exchange for years, was allegedly in contact with a Chinese diplomat who was taken into custody by the Chinese authorities several years ago.

In a related piece, Saturday morning’s Yomiuri wrote from Shanghai that a Japanese woman who was apprehended by Chinese authorities last June on suspicion of espionage was formally indicted earlier this month. Details of the charges have not been disclosed.
