The governors of the 47 prefectures unanimously agreed to set up a study group aimed at discussing ways to reduce the base-hosting burden on Okinawa within the National Governors’ Association during the final session of their two-day meeting on July 29.

“The base issues in Okinawa do not only concern one prefecture,” said Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga. “I want [the governors present here] to acknowledge that these are issues that call Japan’s democracy and local autonomy into question. I would appreciate it if you could seriously consider these as issues that concern you.”

This is the first time for the National Governors’ Association to set up a study group to exclusively discuss the base issues in Okinawa. (Abridged)
