The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will build a research center for artificial intelligence (AI) in Kashiwa City, Chiba. The center will provide a hub for research collaboration among government, industry, and academia to develop technologies such as sensors to collect data. The technology will be used for advanced AI capable of independent learning utilizing the data. The center is expected to open as early as the end of 2017 to catch up with field leaders like the U.S.

The center will employ researchers from both public and private institutions, including corporate research divisions of automobile and electronics manufacturers. This will be the first time for such collaboration to be conducted in the field of AI development. The plan will be approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday, and included in economic measures. The government plans to include the construction cost and other expenses in the preliminary budget plan to be submitted to the fall Diet session.

Application of AI technology is expected to promote the development of robots and self-driving vehicles.
