Last Friday the Ministry of Environment announced that in 2014 the domestic “environmental industry” generated an estimated 105.4133 trillion yen in revenue, a new record. “Environmental industry” refers to global-warming countermeasures and the promotion of recycling. The ministry concluded that the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program introduced in 2012 has been effective in accelerating the development of the renewable energy industry.

The market size of the environmental industry in 2014 was 1.8 times the size in 2000, according to the ministry. Employment in the industry rose to roughly 2,560,000, 1.4 times the figure of 2000. The environmental industry’s share of all industries grew to 11%.

Estimated exports and imports in the environmental industry were about 16.7 trillion yen and 3.3 trillion yen, respectively.
