This morning’s Ryukyu Shimpo took up a Supreme Court decision to go ahead with the murder trial of a U.S. civilian worker at Kadena AB at the Naha District Court, noting that the top court rejected the defendant’s request for his case to be handled in Tokyo on the grounds that “sufficient institutional arrangements are guaranteed to hold a fair trial [in Okinawa] based on law and evidence.” The defendant’s lawyer said although he respects the top court’s judgment, he may ask the local court to conduct a psychiatric evaluation of his client since he received treatment for depression when he was a teenager.
