All papers took up press remarks on Thursday by newly appointed Okinawa Affairs Minister Tsuruho, who commented on the central government’s subsidies for Okinawa by saying: “Pump-priming measures for Okinawa are definitely linked to base issues.” With this remark, the GOJ official indicated that budget for the island economy may be cut in the event of delayed FRF construction due to local opposition. As CCS Suga agreed with Tsuruho’s statement yesterday, Okinawa Governor Onaga is bound to react sharply to the apparent policy turnaround by the Abe administration, which has denied any connection between subsidies and base issues.
