160805 okinawaToday’s two major Okinawa papers reported extensively on the Abe administration’s new policy of cutting back its grants and subsidies for Okinawa in the event of a prolonged delay in FRF construction. The papers criticized the central government’s new position of linking subsidies to progress on Futenma relocation as “blackmail” and “discrimination.” Ryukyu Shimpo speculated that the defeat of Okinawa Affairs Minister Shimajiri in the recent Upper House election prompted Tokyo to take a hard line toward Governor Onaga. Local officials and residents reacted sharply to the GOJ’s policy of “starving” Okinawa.
