According to a nationwide (telephone-based) public opinion poll conducted by the Asahi Shimbun on Aug. 6–7, views are split on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Aug. 3 cabinet reshuffle, with 37% of respondents indicating they “approve” of the reshuffle overall and 34% indicating otherwise. The cabinet support rate was 48% (45% in the previous poll conducted on July 11–12) while the nonsupport rate was 29% (35%).
The public’s evaluation of the administration’s new economic measures, which are worth 28 trillion yen, was also mixed, as 40% said that they “approve” while 36% said they do not. Prime Minister Abe’s term as LDP president ends in autumn 2018, and respondents were asked for their views on extending his term. Those opposed to the extension exceeded those in favor, 48% to 29%.
