NHK reported last night on the results of its latest public opinion poll that put support for the Abe cabinet at 53%, up five points from a month ago, and nonsupport at 32%, down four points. However, 31% expressed opposition to amending the LDP rules to allow him to occupy the top party post beyond September 2018, while 22% felt otherwise. Only 19% said electoral cooperation among the DP, the JCP, and two other opposition parties should continue, whereas 31% said it should not. According to a TBS opinion survey, a plurality of 32% said DP Acting President Renho is the most qualified candidate for the next leader of the largest opposition party. Former Foreign Minister Maehara and former Environment Minister Hosono ranked below Renho with support rates of 5% and 4%, respectively.
