Tuesday evening’s Nikkei front-paged a report from Washington on a speech delivered by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Aug. 8 in Detroit. Trump suggested streamlining income tax brackets and corporate tax caps and expressed strong opposition to the TPP. Yomiuri ran a similar inside-page report saying that Trump expressed his intention to withdraw from the TPP by saying that the auto industry would lose many jobs as a result of the TPP. Although the Republican platform adopted in July did not directly refer to the TPP, Trump clarified his opposition to the trade agreement in the speech. Most Wednesday morning papers ran similar reports.
