All Thursday papers wrote from New York that a press statement drafted by the U.S. and Japan protesting the DPRK missile launch on Aug. 3 is unlikely to be issued by the UN Security Council due to strong opposition from China, which claims that all relevant parties should stop taking actions that could provoke each other or raise tensions in the region. The dailies speculated that China is opposing the statement in order to express its objection to a decision by the ROK government to deploy a U.S. military THAAD missile defense system. Nikkei and Yomiuri said although Tokyo is displeased with China’s opposition, which may also have been reinforced by Japan’s relentless criticism of Beijing’s maritime operations in the South China Sea, it has no effective tools to bring China around.
