Japan, Philippines agree on respecting “rule of law”

All Friday papers took up visiting Foreign Minister Kishida’s meeting with Philippine President Duterte in Davao on Thursday, during which they affirmed the importance of resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, bearing in mind the ruling against China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea by the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The Japanese minister sought Manila’s understanding for Japan’s handling of China’s maritime operations in the Senkaku vicinity. Duterte voiced appreciation for Tokyo’s provision of patrol boats to the Philippine Coast Guard.
