China cancels senior diplomat’s trip to Japan

Thursday’s Asahi took up the disclosure by a GOJ source that a visit to Tokyo by a senior Chinese diplomat originally scheduled for mid-August has been suspended because of Japan’s “persistent protests” against Chinese patrol operations near the Senkakus. Noting that the diplomat had planned to make arrangements for the foreign ministers of Japan, China, and South Korea to hold a tripartite meeting in Japan in late August, the daily said it will now be difficult to convene the tripartite session. The trilateral meeting was also meant to lay the groundwork for a possible summit between Prime Minister Abe and President Xi on the margins of the upcoming G20 summit in Hangzhou.
