Most broadcasters and national papers led with updates on the Rio Olympics, including reports that three Japanese athletes won gold medals on Wednesday. TV Asahi gave top play to a report on the Japan Coast Guard’s rescue of six Chinese fishermen in international waters near the Senkaku Islands on Thursday morning after their boat collided with a Greek cargo ship and sank.

Tokyo Shimbun’s lead item was the discovery by a Japanese academic of archival documents supporting the view that Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution was originally proposed to the GHQ by then Prime Minister Kijuro Shidehara. The daily emphasized that the documents weaken Japanese conservatives’ claim that the war-renouncing clause was “unilaterally imposed” on Japan by the allied powers.
