Abe sends ritual offering to Yasukuni Shrine

Most broadcasters reported at noon that earlier in the day Prime Minister Abe sent a ritual offering to Yasukuni Shrine to mark the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in WWII on Aug. 15. Abe sent Yasutoshi Nishimura, special assistant to the LDP President, to make the offering on his behalf as party leader. A group of about 70 bipartisan lawmakers, including Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Kishi and State Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mizuochi, visited the shrine this morning. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Hagiuda and LDP lawmaker Shinjiro Koizumi separately visited the shrine. Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Takaichi plans to visit Yasukuni this afternoon.
