ROK leader calls for efforts toward “future-oriented” ties with Japan

All papers wrote that South Korean President Park called for efforts to forge a “future-oriented relationship” with Japan while squarely looking at history during her speech on Aug. 15 marking the 71st Liberation Day, which celebrates the end of Japanese colonial rule in 1945. This is the first time for the ROK leader to refrain from mentioning the comfort women issue in the annual speech, and there were no critical words directed at Tokyo. The papers speculated that Park’s speech this year expressed her readiness to improve ties with Japan.
