Militia members onboard Chinese trawlers near Senkakus

Sankei claimed in its lead story that according to several Chinese fisheries sources, at least 100 armed militiamen were onboard the 400 Chinese fishing vessels that operated simultaneously around the Senkakus earlier this month. Many of the specially-trained armed agents had commandeered trawlers and were tasked with collecting intelligence on Japanese patrol operations and surveying underwater geographical features. The daily claimed that the armed fishermen were mobilized by Chinese authorities.

In a related story, Nikkei took up a MOFA webpage on “trends in Chinese government and other vessels” in the Senkaku vicinity, noting that the number of Chinese ships operating in the area is “considerably larger” than that in the South China Sea.
