Top diplomats of Japan, China, South Korea to meet in Tokyo next week

In a report from Beijing, Tokyo Shimbun claimed that the foreign ministers of Japan, China, and South Korea are likely to hold a tripartite meeting in Tokyo on Aug. 23-24. Although China had been reluctant to hold such a session until recently because of Japan’s persistent criticism over South East China issues, the Japan Coast Guard’s rescue of Chinese fishermen near the Senkakus last week apparently prompted Beijing to adopt a positive stance on the trilateral ministerial. The Chinese are now willing to hold enhanced dialogue with Tokyo in preparation for the G20 summit scheduled for early September in Hangzhou.
