Japanese Embassy comments on Biden’s remarks on Constitution

NHK reported in its noon news program that the Japanese Embassy in Washington made a comment to the network on Aug. 16 concerning Vice President Biden’s recent remark that the U.S. “wrote” Japan’s Constitution. The embassy said that it refrains from commenting on specific remarks made during U.S. presidential campaigns, but added that it believes that although Japan’s postwar constitution was enacted under the strong influence of the U.S. occupation authorities, it went through a thorough debate and vote at the Diet. The network said that it is unusual for a senior U.S. government official to say in public that Americans authored Japan’s Constitution.
