Yomiuri front-paged a report saying that the GOJ has begun developing a new system that will enable the Defense Ministry to constantly monitor the situation in space, including the movement of satellites and space debris. The GOJ hopes that the new system will help Japan safely operate its satellites and step up its security cooperation with the U.S. by enhancing Japan’s ability to collect information about space. The Defense Ministry plans to design the system using radar and optical telescopes by the end of this fiscal year with the goal of making the system operational in 2022.
