U.S. Naval Forces Japan will conduct field carrier landing practice (FCLP) for carrier-borne aircraft stationed at its Atsugi base (in Yamato and Ayase) on Iwo Jima Island on August 23-30. The Ministry of Defense informed the local municipalities about the plan on August 16. No FCLP has been performed at this time of year since 2009.

The FCLP could be performed at the Naval Air Facility Atsugi on August 26 -30 (from 10:00 to 22:00) in case weather does permit conduct of the practice on Iwo Jima.

The mayors of Yamato and Ayase submitted a written request asking that FCLP not be conducted at Atsugi to John Bushey, commanding officer of the Atsugi base, on August 16. (Abridged)
