NHK reported on a NASA plan to launch in late September a probe for collecting data on near-Earth asteroid Bennu, noting that in assembling and operating OSIRIS-REx, the agency is capitalizing on expertise learned from a similar Japanese mission performed by explorer Hayabusa six years ago. Program coordinator Jeffrey Grossman said: “Hayabusa was a wonderful demonstration that you can return the materials from the nearest asteroid, and it was a marvelous success that they got a sample back. We’ve learned a lot from Hayabusa.”
