Asahi reported that Tokyo Governor Koike, Kanagawa Governor Kuroiwa, and the leaders of nine municipalities around NAF Atsugi on Wednesday sent to the Defense Ministry petitions asking that the U.S. military refrain from performing landing practice by carrier-borne aircraft at the installation in late August. According to the daily, the U.S. military may choose to conduct the training at Atsugi from Aug. 26 through 30 in the event of foul weather on Iwo Island.
