The Ministry of Defense (MOD) announced on Aug. 22 that it will launch exercises for evacuating Japanese nationals overseas on Aug. 23, using the Self-Defense Forces base in Djibouti, located in eastern Africa, where the security situation has deteriorated.

According to MOD, this is the first time for such exercises to be conducted. The government had at one point looked into the possibility of transporting Japanese nationals from urban areas to the airport using Air Self-Defense Force vehicles when large-scale fighting broke out in July in the capital Juba of South Sudan. According to an SDF officer in charge, the ministry decided to conduct the exercises with this situation in mind.
