Japan-South Korea finance talks, in which Finance Minister Taro Aso will participate, will be held on Aug. 27 in Seoul. Attention is being focused on whether the agenda will include discussion of reviving the “currency swap arrangement” that gave each country access to the other’s dollars in an emergency.
The finance talks give the two countries’ senior financial officials an opportunity to exchange views on a wide range of fiscal and financial policies. Although the two countries agreed in 2006 to hold bilateral talks every year, the upcoming talks will be the 7th round because they were suspended due to strained bilateral relations. (Abridged)
