The Mainichi Shimbun, Obunsha and Casio Computer announced on Aug. 25 that they have reached a basic agreement on the establishment of an English language proficiency test, which will assess the listening and speaking abilities of phrases often used in daily life and the service industry. The aim is to foster personnel capable of communicating with foreign visitors, which are growing in numbers. They will jointly set up a company that runs this project. The first test is scheduled to take place next March. They hope to attract 100,000 examinees in three years’ time and increase the total number to 1 million within five years. (Abridged)
