Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohishide Suga told the press on Friday that the reduction of the revitalization budget for Okinawa is not unique to the prefecture saying, “Everywhere in the country prefectural expenditures are reviewed as needed. Okinawa is no exception.” He said that the central government will abide by its commitment to provide Okinawa an annual budget of more than 300 billion yen until FY2021.

During a press conference on the same day, Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga said, “We managed to secure a budget of over 300 billion yen,” indicating his acceptance of the allocation. However, he described the 27.5 billion-yen reduction of the lump-sum allocation— the usage of which is largely left to the prefecture’s discretion— as “a severe blow.”

About the speculation by some that the dispute with the Tokyo government over the Futenma issue led to the reduction, Onaga denied it by saying, “I don’t believe that was the case.” (Abridged)
