Major factions in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) are scheduled to hold workshops from this week through early September in various locations. Although their aim is to strengthen solidarity, some factions are apparently trying to increase their membership by inviting the participation of lawmakers elected in the July House of Councillors election and independent lawmakers who are hoping to rejoin the LDP.

The Nikai faction, the fifth largest group, held a workshop on Aug. 26 in Sapporo. This small faction has secured the LDP secretary general post and two cabinet posts. At the start of the session, a video message from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shown. In the message, Abe praised the Nikai faction by saying, “Nikai faction members are supporting the foundation of the Abe administration.” Nikai emphasized that the party should “aim to hear words focusing on Prime Minister Abe about how the LDP has upheld its reputation .”

Former Reconstruction Minister Tatsuo Hirano, who joined the Nikai faction in July, took part in the session. House of Representatives member Kotaro Nagasaki, who has asked to rejoin the LDP, also attended it in the capacity of a “special member.” Nikai hopes to have Nagasaki return to the party.

However, the LDP Yamanashi chapter, which is headed by Lower House member Noriko Horiuchi, and the Kishida faction, to which Horiuchi belongs, have strongly opposed Nagasaki’s return to the party.

In addition, the Hosoda faction, the largest group and the one to which Abe used to belong, will hold a workshop in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, on Sept. 4 and 5. The Nukaga faction, the second largest group, plans to hold such a session on Aug. 28 in Karuizawa.

The Tanigaki group, whose leader former Secretary General Sadakazu Tanigaki has been hospitalized due to a bicycle accident, will conduct a workshop on Sept. 11 and 12 in Karuizawa. However, Tanizaki probably will not be able to attend the session.
