Akihisa Nagashima, former vice defense minister, decided on Aug. 29 that he will not run in the Democratic Party (DP) presidential election (official campaign starting on Sept. 2 with voting on the 15th) but support former Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara. Nagashima appears to have decided to support Maehara because the two DP members are critical of their party’s cooperating with the Japanese Communist Party (JCP) and share political beliefs such as constitutional amendment.

On Aug. 29, Nagashima met with Akihiro Ohata, former minister of economy, trade and industry, and other DP lawmakers who have expressed support for Maehara in the Diet building. He reportedly told Maehara that “he intends to support him.” Nagashima said, “I will announce my decision to my supporters in my home constituency.” (Abridged)
