The Reconstruction Agency on Monday announced a budget request for FY2017 that totals 1.9592 trillion yen. With a 18.6% decrease from the initial FY 2016 budget, this is the first time since the agency was established in 2012 that its request has been under 2 trillion yen.
The main items in the budget request are 296.3 billion yen for disaster recovery projects, 53.6 billion yen for reconstruction grants, 132.4 billion yen for victim support, and 1.1 billion yen for human resources measures such as supporting businesses that accept long-term student interns from Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures.
As a Fukushima nuclear accident-related expenditure, the agency has requested 272.4 billion yen for improving intermediate storage facilities. Countermeasures to damage caused by harmful rumors about agricultural and other products, and support for businesses hit by the quake will be requested by item, without initially specifying monetary amounts.
The government-wide total budget request of the special account for reconstruction is 2.4557 trillion yen. (Abridged)
