Democratic Party (DP) policy chief Shiori Yamao decided on Aug. 30 to support Seiji Maehara, former foreign minister, in the DP presidential election (official campaign kicking off on Sept. 2 with voting on the 15th). Yamao is the first person among DP executives led by Katsuya Okada to throw his or her support behind Maehara.
Yesterday, Yamao conveyed to Okada and Secretary General Yukio Edano her intention to support Maehara.
Yamao belongs to the group headed by Maehara. When she was selected by Okada to serve as policy chief, she consulted with Maehara. She has asked him for advice after assuming her current post. Many in the Okada-led leadership will likely support Renho, acting president of the DP. (Slightly abridged)
