The Japanese government on Wednesday established a “Finance Working Group”  under the council for economic cooperation with Russia, whose aim is to enhance comprehensive economic cooperation with Russia.

The group was created to implement the eight-point economic cooperation plan that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented to President Putin in May by preparing the business environment in Russia to accept Japanese investment. With the economic cooperation plan in place, the Japanese government hopes to make progress in negotiations toward the conclusion of a peace treaty that includes a resolution of the Northern Territories issue.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the first meeting of the group, along with senior managers from private financial institutions, to confirm and evaluate the current international situation surrounding Russia, as well as its domestic business environment.
