SDF chief of staff welcomes assignment of new duties to GSDF in South Sudan

At his regular news conference on Nov. 17, Self-Defense Forces (SDF) Chief of Staff Katsutoshi Kawano welcomed the cabinet decision to assign the new rush-to-the-rescue duty based on the security laws to the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) troops deployed in South Sudan for UN peacekeeping operations (PKO). He said: “That’s how things ought to be.”

With regard to the safety of the GSDF members, he stated that, “While they are engaged in duties that come with risks, they have also gained competencies to perform these duties. They are fully trained. I hope that they will minimize risks and ensure safety in the performance of their duties.”
