The Liberal Democratic Party held a division-wide meeting on Wednesday to discuss a bill to enhance gender equality of  participation in politics. The bill will require political parties to do their utmost to equalize the number of male and female candidates in elections for Diet and prefectural assembly seats.

Although proponents are planning to submit a bill during this Diet session, the discussion was quickly stalled during the meeting because a number of counterarguments were voiced by party members who take a cautious stance on the initiative.

Some opponents called for longer and more careful consideration of the initiative, while others argued that women’s participation in politics should be achieved through their own merit and according to each party’s vision, instead of through legislation.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, which had denounced the LDP plan, is leaning toward making a compromise with the ruling parties. Now it will have to wait and see how the situation develops within the LDP. (Abridged)
