Gist of Abe’s remarks after meeting with U.S. President-elect Trump

NEW YORK, Nov. 17, Kyodo — The following is the gist of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s remarks following his first face-to-face talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump Thursday in New York.

 

Abe says:

 

— he is confident he and Trump can build a relationship of trust.

 

— Japan-U.S. alliance cannot function without mutual trust.

 

— he conveyed his basic thinking to Trump and discussed a range of matters.

 

— Trump is a leader in whom he can have great confidence.

 

— he will not give details of the discussion, which was unofficial.

 

— he and Trump agreed to meet again at a mutually convenient time for deeper discussion.
