The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Nov. 17 that Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida will visit New York on the morning of Nov. 18 (evening of Nov. 18 in Japan). He is scheduled to meet with President Richard Haass of the U.S. foreign policy think tank Council on Foreign Relations, who advised President-elect Donald Trump on foreign policy.

Haass is a foreign affairs expert who once served as the State Department’s director of policy planning. While he is not a member of the transition team, he is tipped as a possible candidate for secretary of state in the Trump administration.

Kishida is in Peru from Nov. 17 for the APEC ministerial meetings, but will skip the ministerial conference on Nov. 18 and depart Lima in the late evening of Nov. 17 to fly to New York.
