At its general assembly held in Tokyo on Nov. 17, the Mayors’ Association to Support Children’s Future requested the national government to enhance its policies to address child poverty. The association, which aims to resolve child poverty through concerted action by Japan’s 172 mayors, proposed that the government develop a framework to support measures to address poverty in its early stages. The mayors requested the government to consider a framework to prevent the cycle of poverty through early-stage support for children and a system to enable local governments to tackle poverty over the medium to long term.
