On Nov. 25, the Ministry of Defense officially announced its decision to extend for six months the term of Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, who heads the Self-Defense Forces. Kawano’s tenure will now end on May 27, 2017. The Chief of Staff is said to have many connections with the U.S. military and to be well trusted by the Abe administration. The Self-Defense Forces Act permits the extension of a Self-Defense Forces official’s tenure by a maximum of six months. Kawano is the second SDF official to have his term extended; the first was Hajime Massaki, the first Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff.
