The Defense Ministry announced on Nov. 22 that a Russian Navy anti-submarine patrol helicopter flew for a few hours over the waters about 10 kilometers north of Japan’s territorial airspace of the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, and the Air Self-Defense Force scrambled its fighters to respond. Although the helicopter did not violate Japan’s airspace, it is unusual for a Russian military helicopter to fly near the Senkaku Islands, the ministry says. The ministry is analyzing Russia’s intention.

According to the ministry, the helicopter flew that afternoon over the contiguous zone of Taishoto Island, one of the Senkakus. Then, the chopper flew west toward Kubajima Island, another one of the Senkakus. After flying over Kubajima Island’s contiguous zone, the helicopter turned north. The same day, a Russian Navy’s guided missile destroyer was spotted sailing from north to south in the contiguous zone between the two islands . The helicopter is believed to have taken off from the destroyer.
