Ono Pharmaceutical Co. (Osaka City) and others have filed a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court against MSD K.K., a Japanese subsidiary of Merck, a major U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturer, claiming that MSD has violated its patent right on the Ono Pharmaceutical’s new cancer treatment drug, Opdivo. The plaintiffs seek an injunction to be imposed on Merck’s new drug sales that is scheduled soon.

The first oral proceeding was held on Dec. 12, and MSD expressed its intention to fight the attempt.

Ono Pharmaceutical claims that MSD’s new drug Keytruda, which obtained manufacture and sales approvals in September, contains active ingredients that have the same effects as Opdivo’s.
