With Komeito allowing its lawmakers to cast conscience votes, 18 House of Councillors members of the party – including Komeito secretary general in the Upper House Makoto Nishida — out of a total of 25, voted for the casino bill in the House of Councillors on Dec. 14, while 7 – including party leader Natsuo Yamaguchi and Yuichiro Uozumi, head of the Komeito caucus in the Upper House – voted against.

After the vote, Yamaguchi refused to answer questions from reporters, while Uozumi said that his reason for opposing the bill was “the government will be allowing illegal operations.”
