President Rikio Kozu of the Japan Trade Union Confederation, also known as Rengo, met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Dec. 22 at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence. At the meeting, Kozu asked Abe to resume “meetings between government and labor” from next year so as to discuss labor policies and other matters. In response, Abe, without clearly answering Kozu’s request, said, “The work-style reforms [being promoted by the government] will not be able to produce fruitful outcomes unless labor and management understand each other and move forward with the reforms.”
