During a press briefing on Jan. 6 following a cabinet meeting, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Yuzo Yamamoto announced that the chief negotiators of Japan and the European Union will resume work on an economic partnership agreement (EPA) on Jan. 17 in Brussels, Belgium.

The two sides failed to reach an agreement last year due to differences in the areas of automobiles and agricultural products. The negotiators are expected to engage in intense bargaining as they aim to reach a general agreement early this year.
