On Jan. 6, the government set up an office in the Cabinet Secretariat to plan for the launch of the casino promotion headquarters. This was spurred by the passage in late 2016 of the Act Concerning the Promotion of the Development of Integrated Resort Areas, which legalizes the operation of casinos in Japan. It was also announced on Jan. 6 that the new office will be headed by Toshiya Morishige, former vice-minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The casino promotion headquarters will be led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
