The Ministry of Defense will submit to an ordinary Diet session to be convened on Jan. 20 its third budget request for fiscal 2016 totaling about 160 billion yen for the enactment in February. The Tokyo Shimbun found that while the MOD initially requested 5.0541 trillion yen, the total amount of funds it is requesting for fiscal 2016, which includes both second and third additional requests, comes to a record 5.2358 trillion yen.

The MOD initially requested over 5 trillion yen for fiscal 2016. Besides this, it made second and third requests for funds totaling over 180 billion yen. The money to be allocated from the third budget request will be used for the upgrading and purchase of patrol aircraft and submarines.

Defense-dedicated spending (covered by the Medium Term Defense Program), which excludes expenses pertaining to the realignment of the U.S. forces in Japan and government aircraft from the overall budget for fiscal 2016, also topped 5 trillion yen and set a new record. (Abridged)
