Yamagata University outperformed other Japanese universities in the year-on-year increase in joint research funds from the private sector over the past five years, a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology report shows. MEXT analyzed joint research funds that universities received from companies for the five-year period of 2010 to 2015 and found that Yamagata University knotched an average year-on-year increase of 52.7%. The University of Tsukuba ranked second at 35.2% and Tohoku University came third at 17.2%.

In the last survey, Yamagata University saw a year-on-year increase of 40.8%. It has been extending support to research projects that contribute to society at in-house “centers of excellence,” which it set up in fiscal 2009. Under this initiative, it narrows down research topics. MEXT attributes this to helping increase joint research funds. (Abridged)
