Hosei University (in Tokyo; president, Yuko Tanaka) announced on Jan. 26 that it will prohibit its researchers from applying for the Defense Ministry’s funding for basic research that could be diverted to military use. Kansai University (in Osaka-fu) also decided last December to ban its researchers from applying for such funding.

Hosei University said that a decision was made at a meeting of its board of directors on Jan. 18 that applying for Defense Ministry funding shall be banned “for the time being” and that the board will have to approve offers of funding or research commissions from the Defense Ministry or the U.S. forces.
